About Secret World Wildlife Rescue and
The Healing Weekend
A message from Pauline Kidner - Secret World Wildlife Rescue
Secret World has been operating as a 24 hour rescue service since 2001. With a policy of Rescue, Rehabilitation and Release, the aim is to release casualties back into the wild where they belong, once they have regained full health.
Now the only 24 hour call out service in the South West, Secret World cares for around 4000 animals annually, ranging from badgers, deer and otters, through a wide variety of birds, to tiny Harvest Mice…………..even snakes and toads occasionally. Many of the admissions are orphans, and staff and volunteers are kept very busy especially during the spring and summer months, nursing tiny babies and ensuring regular feeds.
Secret World is known for its work with badgers, not only for rearing cubs and getting casualties back to good health, but for raising awareness of badgers and organising petitions in an attempt to stop the cull of this, one of England’s most popular mammals. Open weekends are a good way of not only raising much needed funds for Secret World but also helping to educate people in the ways of wildlife and allow visitors to see some of the work carried out by the East Huntspill charity.
Until recently, Secret World only opened to visitors on five weekends of the year. However July 2009 saw an exciting event hosted by Secret World, the first Healing Weekend. The centre enjoyed a long association with Bill Harrison, attending the annual Healing Weekend at Mr Harrison’s home in Blackford and taking along various animals to regular one day workshops. After the sad passing of Bill Harrison in April last year, it was suggested that a similar event could be held at Secret World. After much hard work by the Healing Team – Elaine Fenton and Ron Tropman, the ‘Bill Harrison Inspired’ Healing Weekend took place. Animals touch a chord with so many people and everyone who attended the event, be they healers or visitors have all helped in some way to save our precious wildlife.
And a message from Elaine and Ron, 'We had a wonderful time at this year's event and can't wait for next year. To see so many people having a great time and to know that we are also helping this amazing charity is wonderful!'
